    About this site

This site provides hands-on access to maps, images and place names of the Bristol Bay Region. By clicking the button "Launch the Mapping Application," users call up a web-based mapping system that provides access to two types of maps:

    • "Place Names" maps are regional maps that are linked with information about Bristol Bay Area place names. Dots representing each community may be clicked to reveal detailed information from the Bristol Bay Online! Native Place Names database.
    • "Land Status" maps are also regional maps, but these are linked with information about land ownership and status of lands in the Bristol Bay region. Boundaries on these maps identify political and BBNC boundaries. Color coding identifies land ownership, such as lands designated for federal, private or state uses.

    How it Works

The website uses a web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) mechanism that allows for rapid, consistent, and collaborative data collecting and ready access to interested parties. GIS is a method of graphically illustrating large data sets through digital maps, images and data tables. Internet users will be able to view maps with native place names, query and add or suggest edits to the existing information. This base system has been created with the intention of adding more features as new ideas emerge and technology allows. The interactive web-based platform is intended to encourage people to use the system, add more knowledge, suggest edits and corrections, and be accessible throughout the region to schools, tribal entities, communities and people.
